The first weeks with a newborn can feel tender, tiring, and wonderfully ordinary all at once. A family photo session should leave room for that reality. It does not need a spotless home, a shelf of props, or parents who know how to pose.
I am Kevin Duong, a photographer based in Ho Chi Minh City. My newborn and family sessions are built around small gestures: a hand resting on a blanket, a parent looking down at the baby, and the first quiet picture of everyone together. Here is a simple way to prepare without turning the day into another task.
An in-home session can make it easier to keep the day close to the baby's usual rhythm. A bedroom or living room with a window is often enough. We can move a chair or clear a small area, but there is no need to rearrange the whole house.
Natural light changes through the day, so we can discuss which room and time may work best for your home. If you prefer another setting, we can plan that together too. The important part is choosing a place where the family can take breaks and feel at ease.

A quiet family portrait, focused on closeness rather than props.
There is no need to make a newborn session run on a strict shot list. Feeding, changing, soothing, and cuddling are part of family life; they can also give the photographs their natural pace. We can pause whenever the baby or parents need a moment.
I keep the approach simple and parent-led. Comfortable, supported positions are enough; elaborate poses are not required for a meaningful photograph. If an older sibling or another family member wants to join, we can make space for them without expecting anyone to perform for the camera.

A small detail from a newborn story; the family's comfort sets the pace.
Choose clothes that feel comfortable to sit, hold, and move in. Soft or neutral colors can keep attention on faces and gestures, but the family does not need to dress alike. A favorite shirt, a simple blanket, or the baby's everyday wrap can be more personal than buying something new.
Before the session, you might set aside a few meaningful things you already use: a blanket, a tiny outfit, or a family keepsake. These are optional details, not a checklist. The photographs should still feel like your family if the baby needs all the attention that day.
A short sequence can hold more meaning than many carefully arranged setups. I usually think in small parts of a story: the room where the family spends time, a close detail, a parent holding the baby, and a frame with everyone who wants to be included.
| Moment | A simple photograph | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| The room | Window light, a chair, or a favorite corner | Clear only the small area we plan to use |
| The details | A hand, blanket, or familiar item | Choose one or two meaningful objects |
| The family | Parents and siblings close to the baby | Wear clothes that are easy to move in |
| A quiet pause | Feeding, cuddling, or settling | Leave time for breaks |

The in-between moments can become part of the family story.
I am based in Ho Chi Minh City and offer newborn and family sessions in the city, including in-home sessions. If your family is elsewhere in Vietnam or planning a destination session abroad, we can discuss dates and travel arrangements; travel costs are quoted separately.

When should we schedule a newborn photo session?
There is no single date that works for every family. Choose a time that feels manageable for you, then plan the session around your baby's routine and your preferred style of photographs.
Can the session take place at home in Saigon?
Yes. In-home sessions are available in Ho Chi Minh City. We can talk through the rooms and natural light in your home before choosing a plan.
What should parents wear for newborn photos?
Wear something comfortable that lets you hold and move with your baby. Coordinated colors can help the images feel cohesive, but matching outfits are optional.
Can Kevin travel outside Ho Chi Minh City?
Yes. Sessions elsewhere in Vietnam and abroad can be arranged in advance. Travel costs are quoted separately.
A newborn session can be quiet and unhurried. We can plan the space and light together, then let the family set the pace.
